The potential of mean force of nitrous oxide in a 1,2-dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine lipid bilayer

چکیده
The free-energy profile for N2O in a hydrated 1,2-dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) phospholipid bilayer is calculated. The N2O molecule is preferentially concentrated in the tail region of the DMPC lipid and there is no free-energy barrier for the diffusion of N2O from an aqueous environment into the lipid. Although the dipole moment of N2O is rather small, our calculation indicates that the N2O partition coefficient is strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, the van der Waals interaction overwhelms the steric effect and causes N2O concentration to be greatest at a location close to the bcarbon of the 1-myristoyl group. 2010 Elsevier B.V. The MARTINI Coarse-Grained Force Field: Extension to Proteins.
Many biologically interesting phenomena occur on a time scale that is too long to be studied by atomistic simulations. These phenomena include the dynamics of large proteins and self-assembly of biological materials. Coarse-grained (CG) molecular modeling allows computer simulations to be run on length and time scales that are 2-3 orders of magnitude larger compared to atomistic simulations, pr...
متن کاملInsight on the Lateral Organization and the Size Distribution of the Gel and Fluid Clusters in DMPC/DSPC Lipid Bilayers
The organization and compartmentalization of lipid membranes are exciting key phenomena demonstrating that the lipid bilayer is not just a structureless solvent [5]. This is suggested to be of critical importance for many of their functions. Both theoretical findings and experimental data provide evidence that the lateral composition of a membrane consists of micrometer-scale lipid domains [1,8...
متن کاملEffect of ion-binding and chemical phospholipid structure on the nanomechanics of lipid bilayers studied by force spectroscopy.
The nanomechanical response of supported lipid bilayers has been studied by force spectroscopy with atomic force microscopy. We have experimentally proved that the amount of ions present in the measuring system has a strong effect on the force needed to puncture a 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine bilayer with an atomic force microscope tip, thus highlighting the role that monovalent ...

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments have been performed on large unilamellar liposomes prepared from 1,2-dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC), 1,2-dimyristoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and 1,2-distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) in heavy water by extrusion through polycarbonate filters with 500 A pores. The neutron scattering intensity I(Q) in the region of scattering vectors Q c...
متن کاملModification of a supported lipid bilayer by polyelectrolyte adsorption.
Addition of a weak polyelectrolyte, poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA), to a supported phospholipid bilayer made from 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) depresses the melting temperature and alters the morphology of the bilayer in the gel phase. Ellipsometry measurements show that PMA adsorption lowers the phase transition temperature by 2.4 degrees C. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) sh...
